Kony 2012 – be informed (9 March 2012)

You've got to love people discussing real world issues and wanting to do something about humanitarian issues - even though the Invisible Children campaign may be a little late for this particular situation.  Once you've watched the video that will no doubt be on your wall from countless Facebook friends, also check out these links for a broader perspective:

Here are some interesting observations by freelance journalist Michael Wilkerson, and even more interesting comments below his article (particularly from RLIV104 and MITTONK): http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/03/07/guest_post_joseph_kony_is_not_in_uganda_and_other_complicated_things

About me

Before you read any of my posts you probably should know a little bit about me.
I’m an Australian father of three girls.  I grew up in the country, but have lived more than half my life in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.  I was raised as a Christian, so my beliefs and values underpin everything I do.  I am passionate about human rights, equality, and the rights of first nations peoples.  Like most of us, my family is very important to me.  My partner has a degree in nutritional medicine, and has a major passion for food.  She loves our Great Dane almost as much as our kids.  I enjoy spending time with my family, regardless of what we are doing.

I started my career in banking, and after 19 years and numerous roles in customer service, data management, mortgage processing, merchant services and sales, I decided it was time to leave the bank and the oppressive profit-driven environment.  After leaving the bank I worked in recruitment for a short time before moving into local government.  Serving the city and its residents has been a return to customer service which I really enjoy, rather than profit driving everything you do.  I love that my work now contributes to the city being a better place for those that live, work, play and visit here.

I love sport, and played football, tennis, basketball and golf in my junior years, and dabbled in mixed netball and table tennis in my 20s before settling on playing and coaching basketball which I did year-round for many years.  My sporting days ended when I ruptured my ACL in my 30s, requiring a full knee reconstruction.  So now I get my sporting fix from watching a lot of AFL and sometimes NFL, and taking my eldest daughter to her netball games.

I do get passionate about some issues, and like to have my say.  I started by posting on Facebook, and decided to expand it to this blog – mostly so that my posts don’t get lost over time.  My hope is that those of you that read my blog will hear a different point of view, consider whether your views are your own or those of the media, and maybe even be inspired to act for the greater good.  Regardless of your reaction to my writing, thank you for taking the time to read it.
